History of Elk Grove

The foundation of Elk Grove was laid in the east-west stretch of the road running from Elk Grove-Florin Road and connecting it to Waterman. In 1893, Elk Grove got its first union free high school. In 1908, the city witnessed the establishment of first free county library branch. The city was named after Elk Grove Stage Stop which was established in 1850. In 1868, when the area witnessed the establishment of a railroad, i.e., the Western Division of the Central Pacific Railroad, it resulted into the rise of Elk Grove. It was based on the land bought by George Harvey Kerr. A farmer, Julius Everson could see Elk Grove as a potential center for flourishing farming community, and thus established Elk Grove Building Association in January 1876. Bob’s Club is famed as the oldest building surviving in Elk Grove. It survived the devastating fire that took place in 1892. On the lucky day of July 1, 2000, Elk Grove was incorporated as a city.
